Dear ICON-S Members,

The Society has expanded its ranks exponentially since its establishment in 2013. As we are heading into our fifth Annual Meeting (Copenhagen, July 5-7 2017), membership stands at approximately 900 and counting.

As decided in the recent annual Council and Executive Board meeting held during the ICON-S Berlin 2016 Annual Meeting, we have embarked on a governance renewal process, following a successful three-year inauguration stage, and building on the experience gained during the Society’s first three years of existence (2013-2016). The renewal process started in Fall 2016 with a reduction in the size of the two inaugural governing bodies: the Society’s Council (from 50 to 40 members) and the Society’s Executive Committee (from 12 to 8 members). The latter stage has seen the stepping-down of four of the Society’s “founding fathers”, Sabino Cassese, Joseph Weiler, Susanna Mancini, and Michel Rosenfeld, to whom so much of the Society’s inspiration, success and stature is owed.

To enable the renewal process to continue, the time has come to embark upon the second stage, which is full membership-based election of eight new Council members.  This process should be completed prior to our 2017 Annual Meeting. It will be followed by a third stage, which is the replacement of two incumbent Executive Committee members with two new members to be chosen from the ranks of the new Council membership. This third stage of the renewal process will be completed prior to our 2018 Annual Meeting.

We are writing now to ask you to nominate suitable candidates for Council membership. Membership of the Council is a position of high distinction which entails responsibility for the intellectual guidance, advice and representation of the Society.  Self-nomination is entirely acceptable, subject to fulfilment of the aforementioned criteria. More information about the Society’s governing bodies, including the existing membership of the Council can be viewed at https://icon-society.org/governance/.
Nominations should be sent via email to the ICON-S account, icons@icon-society.org with cc to lorenzo.casini@nyu.eduran.hirschl@utoronto.ca and grainne.deburca@nyu.edu by April 20, 2017.
Please include the nominee’s name, title, institutional affiliation and a link to their CV or webpage.
Nominations will be reviewed by the Executive Committee by May 3, 2017, and the names selected will then be submitted for electronic voting by the entire Society membership.  The eight candidates who receive the highest number of votes will be invited to join the Society’s Council as of July 2017.

We look forward to seeing you all at the Annual Meeting in Copenhagen in July.

Best regards,

Gráinne de Búrca and Ran Hirschl
