The Co-Presidents of the International Society of Public Law (ICON•S)—Professors Richard Albert and Marta Cartabia—today announce that Professors Sergio Verdugo and Michaela Hailbronner have taken office as leaders in the Society’s Secretariat. Verdugo will serve as Secretary General and Hailbronner as Deputy Secretary General.
“We cannot think of a better pair than Sergio and Michaela to work with in the three years ahead to advance the work and mission of the Society,” said Marta Cartabia.
Richard Albert agreed: “Sergio and Michaela are scholar-leaders of the first rate, and more importantly persons of high integrity who have earned the respect of the ICON-S membership the world around.”
Albert and Cartabia look forward to working closely with Verdugo and Hailbronner to advance their presidential theme for their tenure: Transforming Thought into Action to Defend the Values of Public Law.
Sergio Verdugo is an Associate Professor of Law at Universidad del Desarrollo, Chile, where he directs the Center of Constitutional Justice and the Center of Economic Regulation. He teaches political theory, constitutional law and comparative law. His research interests also include constitutional theory, the politics of constitutional courts, constitution-making and human rights. He is a co-editor-in-chief of the Spanish issue of the International Journal of Constitutional Law and a member of the editorial board of Actualidad Jurídica. He holds degrees from Universidad del Desarrollo, P. Universidad Católica de Chile, University of California at Berkeley (LL.M.), and New York University (J.S.D.).
Michaela Hailbronner is a Professor of Public Law and Human Rights at the University of Giessen, Germany. She works on comparative constitutional law, constitutional theory, European law and human rights, with publications e.g. in the American Journal of Comparative Law and the University of Toronto Law Journal, OUP and ICON where her analysis of German constitutionalism won the I.CON Inaugural Best Paper Award 2014. She is a member of the ICON Advisory Board, of the Editorial Board of World Comparative Law and Co-President of the German ICON-S Chapter. Michaela holds law degrees from Germany and from Yale Law School (LL.M. & J.S.D.).
Verdugo and Hailbronner began their three-year term on July 9, 2021.
